Service 04 · Embedded

You need an operations lead below the C-suite, but can't hire one right now.

I step in and own it: the systems, the implementations, the vendors, and every call that comes with them.

What owning it means.

Not advising on the systems. Owning them, and the implementations, and the vendors, and every call that comes with them. The decision lands with me and I answer for it.

The situations this covers are usually temporary and rarely quiet: a hiring freeze, a heavy stretch, or the run-up to hiring the permanent person, where the work cannot pause for the search.

This is the one everything else tends to turn into. Most engagements don't end where they started, because an assessment finds an implementation, and an implementation finds three more decisions nobody owns.

What you leave with.

  • Embedded
A named person accountable for the operations side of the business, working inside how you already run rather than alongside it.
  • Vendor management
The relationships, the schedules, and the conversations nobody enjoys having, handled rather than escalated.
  • Implementation oversight
Whatever is mid-flight stays mid-flight, with someone answering for whether it ships.
  • Hiring-freeze cover
The role covered through the freeze, the stretch, or the run-up to hiring, without a permanent headcount to approve.

Gave a marketing team a site they could run themselves.

An organization was stuck on a limited system its own team couldn't update, so every copy change and new landing page went into a developer queue and sat there. I led the redesign and a secure, self-serve CMS, with SEO, AI, and accessibility work built in, so the team ships changes without waiting on developers.

Questions I get asked before this one starts.

  • What exactly do you own?

The systems, the implementations, the vendors, and every call that comes with them. That is the distinction from advice. An advisor tells you what they would do, and the decision stays on your desk. Here the decision lands with me and I answer for it.

  • How is this different from the other three services?

It is the one everything else tends to turn into. An assessment finds an implementation. An implementation finds three more decisions nobody owns. Most engagements don't end where they started, and this is where they tend to end up, which is why the shape of an engagement is never fixed to the service you came in through.

  • Is this cover until we hire someone permanent?

Often, yes. A hiring freeze, a heavy stretch, or the run-up to hiring the permanent person are the usual reasons. The work does not pause for a search, so the role gets covered while the search runs.

  • Is this a fixed-fee project or a retainer?

Either. Every engagement takes one of two shapes, a fixed-fee project or a defined-term retainer, and which one depends on the work rather than on which service you came in through. Either way you get a written scope and a price before anything starts.

Ready when you are

Not sure how much of this you need owned? Say so on the call.

Thirty minutes, no pitch, no slides. We talk through what's going sideways and whether I'm the right person to help. If I'm not, I'll say so.
